IN A WEEK, IT'S LIVE OR DIE FOR THE AMERICAN EXPERIMENT.
Extreme language? Perhaps. Inappropriate? I don't think so. For instance, to say, "Whether or not you move, now, from that comfortable spot, will determine whether you live or die," is extreme language. If there is a fire in the downstairs apartment and you notice the floor under your friend's recliner being compromised, it is also appropriate language. Warnings, however extreme, are justified if there is an actual deadly threat. This is going to be a long article. I'll ask you to bear with me and be patient, because there is nothing less at stake than our country and our way of life... As I write this it is Tuesday evening, November First. One week from today we will go to the polls to choose a President of the United States. This individual will have vast power over how we live our personal lives, over how we are expected to live, with whom we are expected to associate and what social initiatives we are expected to support. In short, our rights to freedom of religious exercise, freedom of speech, freedom of assembly and freedom of the press; of freedom of self-defense; of how much we pay in taxes and whether or not our government remains "of by and for" the people, are at issue and at stake. They are also at grave risk. One candidate, Mr. Trump, is a recent Evangelical Christian convert. He was prayed over last June at a meeting of over a thousand Evangelical leaders, virtually all of whom have expressed approval (short of IRS-attracting endorsement) of him. He publicly cherishes his Scots-Presbyterian background, but has led pretty much the life one would expect from someone who has become a spectacular success in the rough-and-tumble, take-no-prisoners, testosterone-rich world of high-stakes New York City real estate. Since the June meeting, however, there has been a steadily-progressing softening in Mr. Trump's demeanor. It is obvious he is not the same man he was a decade ago, or for that matter, even in May. See: www.youtube.com/watch?v=cc4Un3LIK_Q Mr. Trump has promised to appoint Supreme Court justices who respect the Constitution as the basic law of the land, and who will, accordingly, act as judges and not as legislators. He has promised to promote and protect religious freedom both here and overseas, and to uphold freedom of conscience. He has promised to put forward a package of structural ethical reforms, including Congressional term limits. See: www.youtube.com/watch?v=DOTLmeOMO1E Mr. Trump has repeatedly promised to repeal and replace Obamacare, and has actual physicians (gosh, what a thought!) advising him on the "how." Leading the team is Dr. Ben Carson, one of the most highly-respected neurosurgeons in the world, who is intimately (and painfully) familiar with the world of insurance as it relates to medicine. See: www.youtube.com/watch?v=JzsP1pkuAC0. Mr. Trump grew up at the side of his father, who made his fortune in modest working-and-middle-class real estate development in Brooklyn and Queens. Seeking to broaden those horizons, young Donald applied to and was accepted by the premier business school in the United States, Philadelphia's Wharton School of Business and Finance, graduating in 1968. In 1975 he borrowed a million dollars from his father to enter the shark-infested waters of Manhattan real estate. His father expected Donald to return, chastened and wiser, within the year. Instead, he built a ten-billion-dollar corporation that employs tens of thousands of people all over the world, and an eight-billion-dollar personal fortune out of his Dad's grubstake. Mr. Trump contends "That's the kind of thinking we need in Washington." He is the only candidate, either in the primaries or the general election, who has promised not to cut Medicare or Social Security, but to "make the country rich enough, again," so that we can afford to sustain them. His economic program is to draw upon friends like Carl Icahn, "the best negotiators in the world" (and that they are), to act on behalf of a policy that puts America first in dealings with other nations. I'm afraid there is nothing quite as positive to say about Mrs. Clinton. To save time, I'll simply refer you to The Clinton Chronicles: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xlcjuah25uY and: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EHB6eyWqES8&list=PLNyl6TqWoNglPnNyhWkIcmZ_SIp4PUi55 In terms of issues, Mrs. Clinton is committed to taxpayer-funded abortions, right up until the time of delivery. When in the Senate, she opposed a ban on "partial birth" infanticide. See: www.youtube.com/watch?v=SvcWePEsg94. Mrs. Clinton opposes the right of professionals and organizations to "opt-out" of providing, or contributing to the financing of, abortions and artificial birth control. She opposes the right to self-defense, favoring instead the Australian model. See; www.youtube.com/watch?v=SvcWePEsg94. also see: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dFneGHsDaA4. I came across an amazing sermon on abortion and the election, delivered by a Roman Catholic priest. It could just as well have been preached by an Orthodox priest or in fact simply shared by any Christian--or for that matter by any human being, religious or not religious, of good conscience. See: youtu.be/881aDDE5qFY This isn't about "politics." It's about morality. Mr. Trump is far from perfect. So am I. So, probably, are you. For that matter, so is everyone, without exception. That's just life on earth. So, given that, the question is--despite the universal fact of sinfulness and fallenness, whose ideas are best going to help us clear at least some of the weeds off of the road to holiness? Who wants--and will try to get-- a society that at least recognizes the value of Godliness, even given the effort will be imperfect? Abraham Lincoln famously said, "There's no right way to do a wrong thing." We need to stop trying to normalize evil in this nation, erecting phony "moralities" to justify it, calling evil good and good evil (see Isaiah 5:20). We live in a country where our schools produce nine-year-old experts in putting condoms on cucumbers, but who are, at best, academically mediocre. See: rankingamerica.wordpress.com/category/education/. We need to change. Our flirtation with Godlessness and statism has gotten us nowhere, and has produced leaders who have actually undermined the basic national values they were sworn to uphold. If we continue along this course we will not survive. In this very lengthy article (thanks for sticking around), I've tried to give an overview of just what we're faced with. At this time next week (it's now four o'clock Wednesday morning), the polls will be closed. Most of the vote will have been counted. We'll wake up to find out whose vision for our nation will have prevailed, and thus we will get a clear look at who we as the nation's people are and what we actually, when given a choice, support. Will we choose life, or a "fundamental change" from which we might well never recover? ARE YOU AN EXTREMIST?
A runaway Executive's relentless pressure has "normalized" perversion. His "executive orders" routinely bypass Congress as he writes new laws for himself at will. He has undermined long-standing alliances and gone out of his way to support our nation's enemies. He has opened our borders in an attempt to flood our nation with illegal immigrants whom he will then attempt to illegally give the vote, so his party can stay in power to continue these policies. This President has instructed his wholly-owned Justice Department to investigate a new category of suspect: "encouragers of extremism." Coincidentally, this most extremist of any politician in the history of our nation has defined such "encouragers" as--that's right--people who disagree with him. Unsurprisingly, these all happen to be Christians (a favorite target of this Administration) who vocally support and work to advance classical morality. In the crosshairs of the new initiative is Liberty Counsel. Liberty Counsel is a Christian, public-interest law firm whose mission is to protect America's traditional values, including religious liberty, from those who would overturn them. They appear with regularity before the United States Supreme Court and Federal District Courts, valiantly fighting to defend our Constitutional rights from those who would rescind them, and they have an admirable record of winning. They warn that they are not the only ones on the Democrats' hit list. This, then, is what our country has come to: a virtual dictatorship, where the full force of government power is being used as a club against potential opponents in an election season. I recommend two courses of action. First, get familiar with Liberty Counsel, if you aren't already--and, if you can afford to, send them a few dollars. Their website is at http://lc.org. Second, familiarize yourself with the Convention of States Initiative. I personally believe it's the best solution to our problem. Their website is at http://www.cos.com. The American ideal is government of, by and for the people, not of, by and for the government. Am I "getting political? I guess in a way I am, but that's an inevitable consequence of commenting on immorality in government; and a government which was elected to use its power in defense of its people, which instead uses it to become their principal adversary, is behaving immorally. We need to pray it isn't too late for our nation, which is already staggering under the weight of the sinfulness into which we have been led. Q: WHAT'S MORE USELESS THAN SCREEN DOORS ON A SUBMARINE?
A: A REPUBLICAN SENATE MAJORITY. We assemble parliaments and councils, to have the benefit of their collected wisdom; but we necessarily have, at the same time, the inconvenience of their collected passions, prejudices, and private interests. By the help of these, artful men overpower their wisdom, and dupe its possessors; and if we may judge by the acts, arrêts, and edicts, all the world over, for regulating commerce, an assembly of great men is the greatest fool upon earth. --Benjamin Franklin, letter to Benjamin Vaughan, July 26, 1784; in Albert H. Smyth, ed., The Writings of Benjamin Franklin (1906), vol. 9, p. 241. Remember the Republican Senate Majority? you know, the ones we elected last November to protect us from the Obama Administration and its systematic dismantling of our society? Well, on the Big Issues, they're so far three-for-three. The problem is, all of them were strikes. Let's reflect, here, that the GOP is in the majority. That means that if they vote for something, it passes. If they vote against it, it doesn't. Accordingly, nothing can pass unless a sufficient number of Republican Senators vote for it. First pitch: De-funding Obamacare. All these people ran against the Democrats' nationalization of our healthcare system. Elect them, they trumpeted, and Obamacare was a gone goose. Once elected, however, they opted to feed the goose rather than chase it. Strike one. Second pitch: Planned Parenthood. Our Republicans ran for office against the opposing party's obsession with the slaughter of children in the womb. Obligingly, Planned parenthood allowed itself to be videotaped making deals to sell the body parts of the infants they murdered, for "research" (thank you, Dr. Mengele). Given the opportunity to act to de-fund the world's principal infant abattoir, our staunch defenders of life voted--not to. Strike two. Surely, however, the new Republican Senate Majority would show its true fighting mettle in the area of foreign policy! Unfortunately, they did... Our President, desperate to claim he did at least one positive thing during his tenure, allowed Iran to write a nuclear non-proliferation agreement that obligated them to nothing while committing us to send them several billion dollars. As if that weren't bad enough, there are still four Americans being held hostage in Iran for whom "The Deal" does nothing. Moreover, Iran is a terrorist state which has vowed to destroy, not only Israel, but us! Our Republicans waxed eloquent and stern against The Deal--and voted for it. Strike three. Unfortunately, Senate politics and baseball operate by different rules. Ever since the days of ancient Rome, the word "senator" has been equated with, "foppish member of the ruling nobility," an individual far removed from the interests of the people he supposedly represents and of his country, immersed in self-interest. Things don't seem to have changed much. Why on earth do we saddle ourselves with senators for not just six years, but for an endless succession of six-year terms? There are billions of dollars of public money that senators get to play with, and that translates into enormous power to do things for people. Those people, in turn, pour bucket-loads of money into re-election campaigns, and the result is that, once in office, most senators can't be dislodged with a stump-puller. For the moral good of the nation--and of the politicians themselves, who get caught up in Washington's nasty little never-never-land--we need to begin to get interested in the Primaries, again. They need to be as important to us as the general elections, at every level, if we are to restore accountability to the governing process. STRANGE NEW WORLD DEPT., PART II
Fr. James Rosselli Several undercover videos have been released, showing medical and other officials of Planned Parenthood chuckling over lunch as they discuss the sale of the body parts of dismembered pre- born infants with clients. The reaction was immediate and overwhelming: demands to withdraw federal funding from this incredibly wealthy private business; demands for criminal investigation, considering the laws that appear to have been broken; overwhelming public indignation, as the extent of this organization's depraved inhumanity is yet more fully revealed. Damage control immediately took the form of claiming the videos were false. They obviously weren't, so It didn't fly. Next was pleading the high humanitarian virtue of butchering babies and selling off their body parts for "needed research." By this time it's common knowledge that there is zero--zilch--no such--actual "necessity," so that didn't fly. What's a good, conscientious cultural cesspool to do??? This Administration's Justice Department doesn't appear likely to do anything but insulate Planned Parenthood from prosecution, and the DNC was quick to affect indignation at the mere mention of such things. But the massive public disgust was something else. Something had to be done! Enter Cecil the Lion. Apparently, a dentist on vacation in Africa, on a chartered safari, legally shot a lion. Suddenly, this was a very special lion. It was an "iconic" lion. In fact, the lion got more iconic by the minute. Apparently, Planned Parenthood's defensive line in The Media had found its distraction. Then interest began to fade, and--behold!--another lion, reputed to be Cecil's brother (!) got shot, by another safari hunter. Fresh furor! bans on trophy hunting! calls to "extradite" the dentist (to where? for what? to a country where trophy hunting is legal?)! Now, don't get me wrong. Personally, I'm not big on trophy hunting. As far as I'm concerned, hunting is something you do to bring food home. And I like cats. All cats, from our family cat Victoria to lions and tigers. And I truly regret the passing of Cecil, who really was known to, and important to, many people. I just don't think any effort to bury Planned Parenthood's revolting behavior under a mountain of contrived, distracting indignation, no matter what it's about, is very wholesome. We need, as a society, to cleanse ourselves of the filth in which we have been wallowing for these many years. The Planned Parenthood videos were a dramatic wake-up call. Will our newly-awakened national conscience be put back to sleep by this distracting hype? May God grant that it will not be. STRANGE NEW WORLD DEPT.
Fr. James Rosselli Our Republican Congress has just received an overwhelming vote of confidence from the American people. The electorate soundly rejected the immoral, improvident, media-driven policies of a President who styles himself a dictator, and gave the Legislative Branch a whopping mandate to restore us to sanity. And what have they done with it? They have handed this same immoral, improvident self-styled dictator the authority to wage global thermonuclear war. War, moreover, against a nation which has incorporated into it laws most of the values shared by the people who elected this Congress! The respected journal, Foreign Affairs, Has framed the issue perceptively: http://www.foreignaffairs.com/articles/141769/john-j-mearsheimer/why-the-ukraine-crisis-is-the-wests-fault. This is quite a different story than the one being told by Mr. Obama's media, into which our Republican Congress mysteriously appears to have suddenly bought.. It makes one wonder whether or not we are actually capable, anymore, of electing to office anything but ego-driven aging children whose idea of "statesmanship" is to go out and bomb somebody. And look who it is they want to bomb: the largest nation on earth, which has with great effort crawled out from under the rubble of the most evil system in history to become a Christian nation with a thriving and growing Church and an entrepreneurial economy that rewards, rather than punishes, individual initiative. This Congress, elected by people with precisely these values, should be regarding modern Russia as the natural ally she has become. They should be bypassing Mr. Obama's sleazy State Department, which forcefully pushes the "values" of atheist secularism and moral and ethical squalor wherever it has an embassy, and engaging in discussions with Mr. Putin: an outspoken Christian convert who has repeatedly repudiated the Soviet Union and his own connection to it. If our incoming Congress can look beyond the need to "not back down" from a decision, however stupid, and re-think their responsibility to the people who specifically elected them hoping for some maturity to emerge out of Washington for a change, we might just have a shot at restoring our nation's greatness--by restoring our goodness. May God help us. |
AN EMBER OF HOPE!
Fr. James Rosselli
As I write this, it's four and a half days after the election's sweeping repudiation of the policies of the past six years. A battered, cruelly abused nation rose up and took a stand for national survival.
It wasn't easy.
We had grown used to the quiet turning of the stomach, as the President bypassed Congress with yet another
executive usurpation of power that took another chunk of our destiny out of our hands and placed it on a shelf in some distant bureaucrat's office. We had grown so used to the sensation, we hardly noticed it anymore. It had simply become, life. But Americans are Americans, and we value our freedom. We value it so much, that last Tuesday we used what was left of our optimism to smash through the carefully-constructed wall of ennui that had been crafted around us.
For the first time in six years, we have a shot at restraining a renegade President who believes in ruling "by pen and phone," rather than in doing his job, which is to administer the country according to the laws written by Congress. The only thing standing in the way of that is the political will of he people we elected.
The Democrat spin is that the country was "sick of gridlock," that we were "sending a message" that the Congress and the Administration should "co-operate more." Of course, their interpretation of that is that Congress should do as they're told by the Administration. But that wasn't the message. The message was that the country was sickened by an immoral President and a Senate that saw its job as running interference for him. Will the new Congress get that message?
Standing in the way is the 2016 election.
Politicians, by nature, want to be popular, want to be liked. That is, after all, how they get elected. This last, policy-based election, was a fluke. We usually vote for candidates who can get us to like them personally. That is, after all, how Mr. Obama--a man of no actual accomplishment, whose records were all sealed and unavailable--did it. He ran for class president on grounds he was the coolest kid at school, and won.
We can't afford to let the people we elected adopt the same sort of shallowness now that they're in office. We have to let
them know that if they want us to keep them in office, they are going to have to fight for America, not for poll numbers.
The salient thing is, this was a policy-based election. People took note. They got interested. And they voted to keep America alive! Now that we have our feet wet in actually dealing with issues, we will probably want more than just the coolest kid in class.
By no means is this over. For the next two years, almost the only thing we will be hearing about is a woman whose policies are identical to the ones we just repudiated. Expect new movies and TV shows about female Presidents. You'll hear the word, "historic" a lot. In fact, the national media, with one or two exceptions, will try to create the impression that Mrs. Clinton has already won, that the election is simply a formality and that whoever runs against her is committing a breach of taste.
We must not fall for it, and we must not let it happen.
Do you know who won this election? Praying people. Christendom raised a mighty voice to the Lord in prayer for forgiveness, for another chance, for the opportunity to become sane, once more. And the Lord heard.
The 1970's "Jesus Movement" star, the late Keith Greene, once made an album entitled, "Get down on
your knees and fight like a man!" We did. It worked.
And that's our task for the next two years.
Get involved! Volunteer! Send money! These are all good things. But the best thing is, pray. We are not fighting flesh and blood, but the powers and principalities in the high places. The people we oppose are victims as much as they are perpetrators, having been seduced into an infernal emptiness that demands they capture as many souls as they can, to try to fill it. Pray that the Lord will rescue them, and bring them into His Kingdom.
Our real enemy is demonic. It will be overcome the same way it was overcome last Tuesday: God's people showed up before the Lord to pray before they showed up at the polls to vote, and He came forth with a brightly burning ember to shine through the darkness that was engulfing us. Over the next two years, faithful prayer--and prayerful faithfulness-- will fan that ember into flame.

WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE CULTURE WAR?!
What a plot for a novel: a renegade President seizes the reins of power, ignoring Congress and the Courts, making up his own laws and ruling by decree. His determination fuels the advance of a secular-appearing religion based on human sacrifice and the worship of sex and self.
In order to promote his new religion, he makes impossible demands upon businesses, granting them relief from his demands if they will enforce, in their company rule-books, whatever he is unable to get passed into law. In order to establish himself as the sole source of power in the land, he systematically cripples the economy, forcing people to become dependent on the government dole while he simultaneously raises taxes. He instructs his central bank to drive private capital out of his country by lowering interest rates to the point where there is virtually zero return on investment. All this while capturing peoples' actual lives by assuming control over the health care system and forcing alternative providers to price themselves out of the market. His new religion demands the destruction of the traditional family, the corruption of children and the removal of any threat to freely-roaming criminals. This is its smiling face. In the background, he promotes the cause of declared enemies, paving the way for their victory over the nation he is sworn to protect. The news and entertainment media, which he has almost completely brought to his heel, occasionally call him "the messiah." His agents filter through the opposition movement, calling with feigned anger for civil war--which would produce the anarchy and chaos that would enable him to cement his power. His main outright attack against his country includes an open-borders policy that admits criminals and terrorists free access, and even complimentary transportation into our major cities. Its biological component is a refusal to restrict travel into the country from places that are suffering an epidemic of the deadliest virus
on the planet.
A battered and desperate nation is enraged, but helpless. The President's party controls the Senate, and every one of those Senators (despite election-year protests to the contrary) has supported these policies in virtual lock-step. The President has even repeatedly challenged the House to impeach him, secure in the knowledge that conviction in the Senate would be impossible. He is therefore unrestrained, free to continue to act as he wishes and rule--not govern--at will.
His only roadblock? a looming election that will determine whether or not he will be able to continue to rule as he sees
fit.
It's an exciting story. The conclusion hasn't been written yet, but I understand it's due shortly.
